Field trip! A visit to Glen’s Garden Market

I’m always up for checking out the latest food trends in DC, and luckily as WFW gains recognition, more people are seeking me out to tell me about new cool spots they know about!  Yesterday I visited Glen’s Garden Market in Dupont with a new friend to check it out.

Here’s the concept: it’s a grocery store/coffee shop/bar that sells local produce and products.  In a way, it’s the result of frustration with DC politics – when environmental legislation that store owner Danielle Vogel was working on didn’t pass, she decided to stop relying on American politics to get things done and did what a good old-fashioned American would do: started a business to encourage the public to make better choices without waiting for laws to catch up.  Read her whole story (check out here too!), and stop by for a visit if you’re in the area – my pictorial synopsis is below!

gorgeous layout – feels very open, but with lots of options.

IMAG2377100% agreed!

IMAG2367 gorgeous purple, yellow, and green peppers

IMAG2372 I didn’t know there were so many colors of beets!

IMAG2373Rainbow swiss chard at its most colorful – different colors of produce usually indicate a variety of antioxidants present

IMAG2371 yumm….things are a bit pricey!  Try a farmer’s market near you for a better rate this weekend.

IMAG2369 silly me?  I didn’t know peanuts were grown in VA!

IMAG2370 grind your own PB on the spot, $5.99/lb!  Stir in some salt or cinnamon when you get home.

IMAG2368 aged in rye whiskey barrels…this sounds soo delicious!

IMAG2376 they also had Guinness ice cream…if I had been going straight home after my visit this WOULD have been in my bag!

IMAG2378 there are definitely a few things you’ve probably never tried before…and should!

IMAG2374IMAG2375 only 2 shelves of non-local products, and they are clearly called out!

IMAG2379 DEFINITELY coming back for a drink – all beers on tap are local, and only $4 a pint!  There’s a small menu of sandwiches, make your own burger, and coffee too.

IMAG2381their prepared foods section is gorgeous, and inspiring!  They’re going to develop a catering menu, so local businesses pay attention – there will be a more interesting world beyond Cosi sandwiches for meetings!

Speaking of inspiring, this Cajun egg salad made me want to try that twist!  Egg salad is easy and fast – great on a sandwich or bed of kale, as I did for dinner:

Ingredients:

  • 6 hard boiled eggs (great recipe here if you need it!)
  • 1/3 c plain greek yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp rice or white wine vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp each of the following: garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper
  • Dash of cayenne pepper and turmeric for color

Directions:
Chop eggs and place in a bowl.  Add all other ingredients and mix with a fork until evenly blended.  Serve cold.

  1. Looks wonderful and so tasty too! Too bad I don’t live closer but I should seek out a place similar here in Allentown, PA! Thanks Sarah!
